Kevin Douillez

Biography

Kevin Douillez, born in 1990 in Wallonia, Belgium and based in Brussels, is a self-taught painter who has been constructing a coherent narrative in dialogue with material for several years. Working with varied materials including acrylic, oil, pastel, and spray paint, Douillez creates abstract expressionist artworks through a process of de- and re-construction.

Free to experiment, Douillez approaches abstract imagination in the form of a purgatory. The contact with material is made through an embrace until exhaustion, aiming to externalize internal ailments. Projected, burst, and incised, the layers of acrylic paint respond to each other to build a new balance in disorder. Noise, movement, vulnerability, instability, sadness, and anxieties transform through this action into ordered silence. Painting becomes an introspective, emotional journey, with the primary goal of seeking light. The large raw format of his cotton canvases is chosen with care to capture and welcome the frenetic aggression of the conflict between material and spirit. Using bold shapes and bright colors, Douillez abstractly communicates the themes of nature, otherworldliness, and inner peace that define his artistic vision.
